In his message for the May 2026 edition of the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region's newsletter, Scindia highlighted the rapid changes taking place across the eight Northeastern states, asserting that the region is no longer viewed through the lens of remoteness and isolation but as a dynamic contributor to India's growth story.

The Minister attributed this transformation to the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the implementation of the Centre's Act East Policy, which has placed the Northeast at the heart of India's connectivity, economic development, and international engagement strategies.

"The transformation unfolding across the North Eastern Region today is not merely one of infrastructure and investment, but of confidence, identity and aspiration," Scindia stated, emphasizing that the region is increasingly being recognized as a pillar of India's future development.

Sikkim Visit Highlights Development Model

Reflecting on his recent visit to Sikkim during the state's 51st Statehood Day celebrations in Gangtok, Scindia described the Himalayan state as one of India's most inspiring examples of sustainable development.

During the visit, he accompanied Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Sikkim Governor Om Prakash Mathur, and Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang at official events marking the occasion.

Scindia praised Sikkim's achievements in ecological stewardship, organic farming, responsible tourism, and sustainable development. He said the state has successfully transformed its mountainous geography into an economic and environmental asset while preserving its unique cultural identity.

One of the key announcements during the visit was the launch of Mission Sikkim Organics, a flagship initiative under the Ministry's Unique Selling Proposition (USP) programme. The project, backed by an investment of ₹360 crore, aims to transform Sikkim into a globally integrated premium organic economy by strengthening cultivation, processing, branding, and market access for organic products.

According to the Minister, the initiative represents a major step toward enhancing farmers' incomes and positioning Sikkim as a global leader in organic agriculture.

Infrastructure and Tourism Receive Major Boost

Scindia's visit also included reviews of several major infrastructure and tourism projects across Sikkim.

He highlighted the under-construction Khangchendzonga State University campus at Tarku, the ambitious Bhaleydunga Skywalk Project, and several road and bridge projects supported by the Ministry of DoNER.

These projects, he said, demonstrate Sikkim's approach to balancing economic growth with environmental sustainability.

The Minister also visited the Temi Tea Estate in Namchi, one of India's most renowned tea estates, and the Orchidarium at the Swarna Jayanti Maitreya Manjari Complex, which houses more than 120 rare orchid species and showcases Sikkim's rich biodiversity.

Describing the Orchidarium as a model for eco-tourism and conservation, Scindia said such initiatives reinforce the state's commitment to protecting its natural heritage while creating economic opportunities through tourism.

He further noted that interactions with local residents and visits to cultural landmarks such as MG Marg provided valuable insights into the state's traditions, community spirit, and development aspirations.

Expanding the USP Initiative Across the Northeast

A significant portion of Scindia's message focused on the Ministry's Unique Selling Proposition (USP) initiative, which seeks to identify and develop specialized value chains rooted in the strengths of each Northeastern state.

The programme is designed to create globally competitive industries by leveraging region-specific products and resources.

Building on the success of Mission Sikkim Organics, the Ministry recently launched four additional flagship initiatives:

Tripura Queen Pineapple Mission worth ₹236 crore

Mizoram Ginger Mission worth ₹189.79 crore

Arunachal Kiwi Mission worth ₹167 crore

Mission Coffees of Nagaland

According to Scindia, these projects aim to strengthen cultivation, processing, branding, cold-chain infrastructure, exports, and market access while ensuring that greater value reaches farmers and local communities.

Northeast's Rise in India's Development Story

Scindia noted that a decade ago, few could have imagined the scale of infrastructure development, connectivity expansion, and economic opportunities now reaching the Northeastern states.

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said, the Northeast has moved from the margins to the centre of India's growth narrative while successfully preserving its unique cultural heritage and identity.

He stressed that improved road networks, bridges, public infrastructure, educational institutions, tourism facilities, and agricultural value chains are creating new opportunities and helping integrate the Northeast more closely with national and international markets.

Commitment to Vision 2047

Looking ahead, Scindia reaffirmed the Ministry's commitment to the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, stating that the Government of India would continue working closely with state governments, central ministries, and stakeholders to accelerate the region's development.

He emphasized that the goal is not only economic growth but also ensuring that the Northeast emerges as a region characterized by peace, prosperity, sustainability, and limitless opportunities.

"The North East has truly moved from the margins to the centre of India's growth story," Scindia stated, expressing confidence that the region will play an increasingly important role in shaping India's future.

Concluding his message, the Union Minister thanked state governments, development partners, community organizations, and citizens whose collective efforts have contributed to the ongoing transformation of the Northeast.

As major investments continue to flow into sectors such as agriculture, tourism, connectivity, education, and infrastructure, the Ministry of DoNER believes the Northeast is poised to become one of India's most vibrant engines of growth in the years ahead.
