Shillong, June 1, 2026: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Monday underscored the importance of a holistic approach to early childhood development, stating that health, nutrition, education, caregiving, and family support must work together to ensure that every child receives the best possible start in life.
Speaking after inaugurating the Early Childhood Development (ECD) Implementation Science Workshop in Shillong, the Chief Minister said the future of Meghalaya depends significantly on the well-being and development of its youngest citizens. The workshop brought together policymakers, experts, development partners, researchers, and stakeholders to discuss ways to strengthen programmes and interventions aimed at improving outcomes for children and families across the state.
Addressing the gathering, Sangma emphasized that early childhood development cannot be viewed as the responsibility of a single department or institution. Instead, he said, it requires coordinated action across multiple sectors, including healthcare, nutrition, education, social welfare, and economic empowerment.
"Early childhood development is not one department's responsibility. It is about health, nutrition, education, care, and economic empowerment all coming together to give every child the best possible start in life," the Chief Minister said.

He noted that the first few years of a child's life are critical in shaping physical, cognitive, emotional, and social development. Investments made during this period, he said, have a lasting impact not only on individual children but also on the broader social and economic progress of the state.
Sangma stressed that development should not be measured merely by the number of policies implemented or programmes launched. Rather, he said, true development is reflected in the everyday lives of people - when children grow up healthy, mothers receive adequate support, and families have access to opportunities that allow them to build secure and hopeful futures.
"Development is not just about policies, but about ensuring every child gets the right start, every mother feels supported, and every family has hope for a better future," he said.
The Chief Minister highlighted the importance of evidence-based policymaking and implementation science in improving the effectiveness of government interventions. He said workshops such as the ECD Implementation Science Workshop provide valuable opportunities for experts, government officials, and development partners to exchange ideas, identify challenges, and develop practical solutions that can improve service delivery at the grassroots level.

He further emphasized the need to focus on measurable outcomes rather than merely implementing programmes. According to Sangma, meaningful collaboration between government departments, frontline workers, educational institutions, healthcare providers, and communities is essential to creating lasting change.
The Chief Minister also reiterated the state's commitment to strengthening initiatives focused on maternal and child health, nutrition, early learning, and family welfare. He said the government recognizes that investing in children today is one of the most important investments it can make for Meghalaya's future.
Sangma expressed confidence that collective efforts by all stakeholders would contribute to building a stronger foundation for children across the state, ensuring that they are equipped to achieve their full potential.
The workshop is expected to contribute to ongoing efforts to improve child development outcomes by promoting stronger coordination, evidence-based strategies, and innovative approaches to addressing challenges faced by children and families.
Concluding his address, the Chief Minister called for continued collaboration among government agencies, experts, development partners, and communities, stating that a shared commitment to children's well-being would help create a healthier, more prosperous, and hopeful future for Meghalaya.
The ECD Implementation Science Workshop forms part of broader efforts to strengthen early childhood development systems in the state and ensure that every child receives the care, nutrition, education, and support needed to thrive.
