Shillong, May 30, 2026: Meghalaya is stepping up preparations to host the 39th National Games in 2027, with Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma expressing confidence that the state is ready to deliver a world-class sporting event backed by modern infrastructure and meticulous planning.

The Chief Minister made the remarks after Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya reviewed Meghalaya's preparedness for the prestigious multi-sport event. Sangma thanked the Union Minister for his guidance and support, stating that the state remains committed to successfully hosting one of India's biggest sporting competitions.
According to the Chief Minister, the 2027 National Games will not only be a showcase of Meghalaya's sporting infrastructure but also a celebration of the entire Northeast region. He said the event is envisioned as a Games for all Northeastern states, with participation and cooperation from sister states reflecting the region's unity, talent, and sporting spirit.
The review comes shortly after Meghalaya officially sealed its candidature to host the National Games by signing the Host State Agreement and inaugurating the new Integrated Multipurpose Indoor Hall in Shillong. The state government views these developments as significant milestones in its efforts to strengthen Meghalaya's sporting ecosystem and create greater opportunities for athletes.
The Host State Agreement was signed in the presence of Union Sports Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, Union Minister of State for Sports Raksha Nikhil Khadse, Meghalaya Sports Minister Wailadmiki Shylla, and Indian Olympic Association President Dr. P. T. Usha.

Describing the occasion as a landmark moment, Sangma said hosting the National Games reflects Meghalaya's long-term vision of emerging as a leading sporting destination in the country. He expressed confidence that the event would attract investment, create opportunities, enhance sports infrastructure, and provide greater exposure to athletes from Meghalaya and the wider Northeast region.
The state government has been investing heavily in sports infrastructure in recent years as part of its broader strategy to nurture talent and position Meghalaya prominently on India's sporting map ahead of the 2027 National Games.
