The decade-long mission envisions the development of a robust kiwi value chain, from cultivation and research to processing, branding and export. Under the programme, Model Kiwi Orchards will be established across 13 districts to promote scientific farming techniques, improve productivity and encourage the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices.

Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Khandu said the mission represents a major step towards making Arunachal Pradesh a leading player in India’s horticulture sector. He expressed confidence that the state’s unique climate and terrain provide ideal conditions for kiwi cultivation.

“Our vision is to make Arunachal Pradesh synonymous with kiwi in the same way Assam is known for tea. Ziro Valley will be at the heart of this agricultural revolution, driving innovation, organic farming and rural prosperity,” Khandu said.

As part of the event, the government also recognised progressive farmers under the Harvest of the Month initiative, which celebrates outstanding contributions to agriculture and horticulture.

Among those honoured was Shri Netan Dorjee Thungon of West Kameng district, who was recognised for his success in apple cultivation. Growing premium varieties such as Royal Delicious and Granny Smith, he expanded his orchard from 300 to 1,200 apple plants, producing around 20 metric tonnes annually and generating an income of approximately ₹12 lakh while maintaining environmentally sustainable practices.

Another awardee, Shri Nani Sha of Papum Pare district, was honoured for his achievements in avocado farming. Cultivating premium varieties including Hass, Ettinger and West Indian avocados, he expanded his plantation to 2,800 plants across 5.5 hectares. His first harvest generated an income of around ₹4 lakh, demonstrating the growing potential of high-value horticulture in the state.

Officials noted that the Kiwi Mission 2025–2035 will focus on farmer welfare, market access, quality planting material, value addition and export promotion. By integrating innovation with traditional farming knowledge, the initiative seeks to enhance incomes, generate employment and strengthen the rural economy.

With the launch of the mission, Arunachal Pradesh is positioning itself as a leader in organic kiwi cultivation, with the potential to become a major supplier of premium-quality fruit to domestic and international markets while driving sustainable agricultural growth across the state.
