The inauguration programme was held at the Chief Minister’s Office in Aizawl and attended by Horticulture Minister C. Lalsawivunga, Adviser to the Chief Minister Dr. K.C. Lalmalsawmzauva, Chief Secretary Khilli Ram Meena and senior officials of the Mizoram Government. Officials from the Ministry of DoNER and ginger farmers from Champhai district also joined virtually.

Speaking during the launch, Lalduhoma said the Ministry of DoNER had recognised Mizoram ginger as a Unique Selling Proposition due to its superior quality, distinctive aroma, medicinal value, low fibre content and high oleoresin and essential oil content. He noted that two major varieties - Thingpui and Thinglaidum - received Geographical Indication (GI) tags in 2021.

The Chief Minister stated that the project would focus on sustainable cultivation, quality control, food safety, farm mechanisation, solarisation, post-harvest management and ginger processing infrastructure. He added that Mizoram ginger had recently passed international quality testing conducted by Eurofins Analytical Services in Bengaluru, further strengthening its export potential.

Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia described the initiative as the “Mizo Ginger Movement” and said it reflected Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of empowering farmers across the entire agricultural value chain - from cultivation to global markets.

Scindia highlighted that Mizo ginger contains 6–8 percent oleoresin, significantly higher than the global average of around 3 percent, yet farmers currently receive only ₹8–15 per kilogram while international market value exceeds ₹500 per kilogram. He said the project aims to improve farmer income through value addition, branding, processing and direct market integration.

Under the mission, one major Processing Hub will be established at Mualkawi in Champhai district, along with smaller spoke hubs at Tualcheng, Vaphai and Zotlang. The infrastructure works are expected to be completed within this year, with processing operations likely to begin next year.

The project will be implemented through convergence with schemes of the Ministries of Agriculture, Rural Development and Food Processing Industries, along with support from NABARD, ICAR, APEDA and private sector partners. Officials said nearly 20,000 farming households are expected to benefit from the initiative.

Scindia further said the mission forms part of the broader “Brand Northeast” vision, highlighting region-specific products such as Lakadong Turmeric from Meghalaya, Kiwi from Arunachal Pradesh, Coffee from Nagaland and Queen Pineapple from Tripura. He expressed confidence that Mizo ginger would soon gain recognition in Southeast Asian, Middle Eastern and European markets.
