The programme was organised by the Fisheries Department and attended by Fisheries Minister Lalthansanga as the guest of honour.

Addressing fish farmers and officials, the Chief Minister said Mizoram has an estimated 24,000 hectares suitable for fish farming, but fish ponds have so far been developed in only around 6,000 hectares, representing nearly 25 percent of the State’s total potential area.

He noted that one of the major challenges facing fish production in the State is the limited number of ponds along with inadequate storage facilities. He also pointed out that fish productivity per hectare in Mizoram remains comparatively low.

Lalduhoma said that even if new ponds cannot immediately be developed, increasing productivity from existing ponds should become a priority. He urged fish farmers to adopt modern technologies and scientific practices, including proper pond management, fish health care and improved feeding methods, to enhance productivity and profitability.

The Chief Minister said the State Government, under the leadership of the Fisheries Minister, is actively working to boost fish production through schemes such as the Blue Revolution, Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana and the Bana Kaih handholding scheme. He added that preparations and action plans are already in place for the anticipated launch of PMMSY 2.0.

Highlighting achievements under the Bana Kaih scheme, Lalduhoma said 201 beneficiaries received assistance for fish pond construction through the CM Special Package, while 14 beneficiaries were supported through the loan component during the first phase. In the second phase, resumed from September last year, 27 beneficiaries have already been assisted under the CM Special Package and five through the loan component.

He informed that applications under the ongoing second phase remain open for eligible project proposals and assured that the Government is also exploring additional initiatives beyond existing central schemes.
