Aizawl, May 4, 2026: Giriraj Singh, Union Minister for Textiles, on Monday announced a ₹46.79 crore package under the Silk Samagra 2.0 scheme to boost sericulture development in Mizoram during his visit to the Sericulture Training Institute (STI) at Zemabawk.

The Minister said the funding aims to strengthen infrastructure, enhance production, and improve livelihoods of farmers engaged in silk cultivation across the state. He highlighted that Mizoram holds a unique position as one of the few regions capable of producing all four major silk varietiesv - Muga, Eri, Mulberry, and Tasar.
During the visit, Singh participated in a Som tree plantation drive, essential for Muga silk production, alongside Mizoram’s Sericulture Minister Lalthansanga and officials from the Central Silk Board. He also inspected the Silk Reeling Factory at the institute.
Interacting with farmers, weavers, and entrepreneurs, the Union Minister proposed a cluster-based development model, suggesting districts such as Lunglei, Champhai, Saitual, and Siaha be developed as specialised Muga silk hubs. He noted that around 6,000 farmers and 19,000 individuals in Mizoram depend on sericulture for their livelihood.

Singh further stressed the need for innovation and collaboration, including partnerships with institutions like the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), to enhance design, marketing, and value addition in silk products.
Speaking on the occasion, Sericulture Minister Lalthansanga welcomed the Centre’s support but underscored the need for further infrastructure development to accelerate growth in the sector.
The announcement is expected to provide a significant boost to Mizoram’s sericulture industry, reinforcing its potential as a key contributor to rural employment and economic development in the state.
