BJP’s Daochier I. Imchen Wins Koridang By-Election in Nagaland

Kohima, May 4, 2026: The by-election to the 28 Koridang Assembly Constituency in Nagaland concluded with a convincing victory for Daochier I. Imchen of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), who secured 7,317 votes and defeated his nearest rival by a margin of 3,123 votes.

The results, declared after the completion of all three rounds of counting, reflected a clear mandate in favour of the BJP candidate, further strengthening the party’s position within the ruling People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA) government in the state.

Independent candidate Toshikaba emerged as the runner-up with 4,194 votes, while another Independent candidate, Imtiwapang, secured 3,633 votes. I. Abenjang of the National People’s Party (NPP) finished fourth with 3,219 votes. Other contestants, including Imchatoba Imchen and T. Chalukumba Ao of the Indian National Congress (INC), trailed behind. A total of 48 voters opted for the None of the Above (NOTA) option.

Political observers noted that the outcome reflects continued public support for the BJP and its allies in Nagaland. The victory is also seen as a significant boost for the ruling coalition as it consolidates its influence in the state’s political landscape.

Reacting to the result, Nagaland Deputy Chief Minister Yanthungo Patton thanked the people of Koridang for their support and confidence in the BJP candidate. He described the victory as a reflection of “unity and a shared vision for the future,” adding that the outcome demonstrated the electorate’s trust in the development agenda pursued by the ruling alliance.

Patton also acknowledged the efforts of party workers, supporters, and leaders at the state and national levels who worked tirelessly throughout the campaign. He congratulated Daochier I. Imchen on his electoral success and expressed confidence that the newly elected legislator would serve the constituency with dedication and commitment.

According to party leaders, the result reinforces the BJP’s growing presence in Nagaland and highlights the effectiveness of the PDA’s governance and development initiatives. They said the victory would further strengthen cooperation within the ruling coalition and help accelerate developmental programmes in the constituency.

Following his victory, supporters and party workers celebrated the result, expressing optimism that the new MLA would address the aspirations and developmental needs of the people of Koridang.

The by-election result is expected to have political significance beyond the constituency, as it underscores the continuing strength of the BJP-led alliance and its ability to secure public support in key electoral contests across Nagaland.
