Mizoram Health Minister Lalrinpuii Says Mizoram Taking Major Steps to Address Nurse Shortage

Aizawl, May 28, 2026: Mizoram Health Minister Lalrinpuii on Thursday said the state government is taking major steps to address the shortage of nurses and strengthen healthcare services across Mizoram.

The Minister made the remarks while attending the 23rd conference of the Mizoram Government Nursing Service Association (MGNSA) held at the Conference Hall of Aizawl Civil Hospital. The theme of this year’s conference was “Soft Skill for Nurses.”

Highlighting the importance of nurses in the healthcare system, Lalrinpuii said nursing is not an ordinary profession but one that requires sacrifice, compassion, patience, and dedication towards serving people.

She stated that ahead of the launch of the Mizoram Universal Health Care Scheme in April 2025, the government recruited more than 300 nurses to help improve healthcare delivery in the state. In addition, 10 permanent Nursing Officers were also appointed.

The Minister further announced that the Health & Family Welfare Department would soon recruit 40 nurses on contract basis along with 10 Senior Nursing Officers. Recruitment processes are also underway for nine Tutor posts and one Warden post in Nursing Schools, while advertisements for five Assistant Professor posts in Nursing Colleges are expected shortly.

Lalrinpuii acknowledged that shortages in the healthcare workforce could not be resolved immediately but assured that the government would continue to strengthen the sector through phased recruitment and infrastructure development.

She also highlighted ongoing improvements at Aizawl Civil Hospital, including installation of a new Cath Lab, MRI facilities, and other modern medical equipment. Under the public-funded CESS initiative, an arthroscope machine worth ₹1.2 crore has also been procured.

The government is additionally preparing to introduce kidney transplant services in Mizoram. Equipment procurement is underway and medical personnel have already been sent to Kolkata for specialised training.

The Minister said the government has sanctioned funds for a VIP power line and oxygen pump systems to ensure uninterrupted services during power outages at Civil Hospital.

Speaking on developments at Zoram Medical College and Hospital (ZMCH), she said preparations for cardio-thoracic surgery services have been completed and healthcare personnel have undergone training at PGI Chandigarh.

New CT Scan facilities have already been commissioned at ZMCH, while additional CT Scan machines have also been installed in Siaha and Champhai districts. Funds for new oxygen plants have also been sanctioned.

Lalrinpuii further stated that the new Mamit District Hospital building is ready for occupation, while construction of district hospitals in Serchhip, Kolasib, and Hnahthial districts is currently underway.

The conference was attended by officials from the Directorate of Nursing and MGNSA members from different parts of the state.

During the programme, National Florence Nightingale Award recipients  V. Lalhmangaihi, Nursing Officer, and H. Mankimi, Senior Nursing Officer, along with Nursing Officer  Lalhmingmawia Thangluah, were honoured for their contributions to the healthcare sector.

MGNSA President Pu H.S. Lalremtluanga delivered the presidential address, while Vice President Zoramchhana delivered the vote of thanks.
