Shillong, May 28, 2026: The United Democratic Party (UDP) on Thursday officially announced senior advocate VGK Kynta as its candidate for the upcoming Shillong Lok Sabha by-election.
The decision was taken during the party’s general body meeting held at the UDP party office in Shillong on May 28.
UDP president and Meghalaya Cabinet Minister Metbah Lyngdoh formally announced Kynta’s candidature in the presence of party MLAs, MDCs, senior functionaries, and a large gathering of party supporters and members.
With the announcement, the UDP has officially entered the electoral contest for the vacant Shillong parliamentary seat, setting the stage for a significant political battle in the Khasi-Jaintia Hills region.
VGK Kynta, a senior advocate and well-known legal figure in Meghalaya, is expected to be one of the prominent candidates in the bypoll. His entry into electoral politics is being viewed as a strategic move by the UDP as the party seeks to strengthen its presence and influence in the parliamentary constituency.
Party leaders expressed confidence in Kynta’s ability to represent the interests of the people of Khasi-Jaintia Hills and highlighted his experience in legal and public matters.
Addressing party workers and supporters during the meeting, UDP leaders called for unity and collective efforts to ensure a strong performance in the by-election.
The Shillong Lok Sabha seat became vacant following recent political developments, paving the way for the bypoll. Political observers believe the election is likely to witness keen competition among regional and national parties in Meghalaya.
The UDP, one of Meghalaya’s major regional political parties, has traditionally maintained a strong support base in Khasi and Jaintia Hills. By fielding a recognised legal personality like VGK Kynta, the party appears to be focusing on credibility, governance, and regional representation ahead of the by-election campaign.
Further election schedules and campaign activities are expected to gather momentum in the coming weeks as parties intensify preparations for the parliamentary contest.
