Meghalaya CM Conrad K. Sangma Lays Foundation Stones for ₹412 Crore Road Projects in East Jaiñtia Hills

Shillong, May 28, 2026: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Thursday laid the foundation stones for three major road infrastructure projects in East Jaiñtia Hills district with a combined investment of approximately ₹412 crore, aimed at improving regional connectivity, boosting tourism, and accelerating economic development.

The foundation stone laying ceremony was held at Latyrke Playground in East Jaiñtia Hills district.

Sharing details of the projects, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma stated that the largest project involves the upgradation of the Dkhiah–Sutnga–Saipung–Pala up to Semmasi Road at an estimated cost of ₹355 crore. The project is expected to significantly strengthen road connectivity across the region and improve transportation access for local communities.

Another project includes the strengthening of the Dkhiah–Sutnga–Saipung–Moulsei–Haflong Road at a cost of ₹10.3 crore. The road improvement works are aimed at enhancing inter-district connectivity and easing travel for residents and commuters.

The third project focuses on improving access to the scenic Chympe Waterfalls tourist destination and upgrading the Sutnga–Khaddum Road at a cost of ₹46.75 crore. The initiative is expected to boost tourism activities in the region by improving road access to one of East Jaiñtia Hills’ prominent natural attractions.

Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma emphasized the importance of quality road infrastructure in transforming rural and semi-urban regions.

He stated that roads are not only about improving connectivity but also about creating economic opportunities, enhancing access to education and healthcare services, promoting tourism, and bringing communities closer together.

The Chief Minister further reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to strengthening infrastructure across Meghalaya to support long-term growth and development.

According to officials, the projects are expected to improve transportation networks in East Jaiñtia Hills district and facilitate smoother movement of goods and people, which could contribute to local trade, tourism, and economic activities.

The government has been focusing on expanding road infrastructure in remote and border areas of Meghalaya as part of its broader development strategy aimed at improving connectivity and public services across the state.

Residents and local leaders welcomed the projects, expressing hope that the improved roads would reduce travel difficulties and open up better opportunities for economic and tourism development in the region.
