Imphal, May 3, 2026: Marking the third anniversary of the violence that erupted in Manipur on May 3, 2023, the The Meitei Alliance has issued a press statement calling for truth, accountability, and lasting peace in the state.
In a statement released on May 3, the organization said the conflict between Kuki and Meitei communities since 2023 has resulted in significant loss of life, widespread displacement, and extensive destruction of homes and livelihoods across the state.
The Alliance noted that nearly one lakh people have been displaced while hundreds have lost their lives during the prolonged unrest. It also stated that the crisis has severely disrupted freedom of movement, economic activities, and social stability in Manipur.
According to the organization, the conflict has often been portrayed in overly simplified narratives such as tribal versus non-tribal or hill versus valley divisions. It said such portrayals overlook the deeper structural issues, historical grievances, and political complexities underlying the disturbances.
The statement also criticised the handling of the crisis by authorities, alleging that the government failed to adequately address the concerns of victims and restore lasting peace despite heavy militarisation and administrative changes.
The Alliance further raised concerns about the alleged role of armed proxies and groups linked to Suspension of Operations (SoO) arrangements, stating that their activities have contributed to escalating communal tensions.

Calling for stronger measures, the organization urged stricter regulation of demographic influx, firm action against narcotics-related activities and illegal poppy cultivation, and protection of the state’s environment and forests.
It also expressed concern over the humanitarian situation of internally displaced persons (IDPs), urging authorities to ensure their safe return to original settlements and address ongoing security and livelihood challenges.
Reaffirming its stance, the Meitei Alliance emphasized that the territorial integrity of Manipur and the unity of its people must be preserved. It also called on citizens across communities to remain united and hold the government accountable in efforts to restore peace and strengthen democracy in the state.
