In a statement titled “An Appeal for Truth and Human Decency” issued on May 14, the organisation rejected allegations circulating online claiming that members of the Kuki community themselves were responsible for the ambush and killings.

The statement alleged that “false and divisive narratives” were being amplified on social media and accused certain individuals and affiliated groups of spreading misinformation regarding the incident.

According to Kuki Inpi, the allegations collapse under scrutiny of Kuki social and kinship structures. The organisation stated that Rev. Vumthang Sitlhou, one of the deceased pastors, had deep familial and social ties within Kuki society through blood relations and marriage.

“The reckless claim that Kukis would target their own pastor, husband, father, and in-law within such an interconnected kinship network is not only baseless, but also reflects ignorance of Kuki customary relationships and social realities,” the statement said.

The organisation appealed to individuals, media platforms, civil society organisations and political actors to exercise restraint and uphold “truth and basic human decency” at a time of grief and mourning.

Kuki Inpi further stated that the families of the deceased pastors should be allowed to mourn in peace without being subjected to “malicious propaganda, communal insinuations, and coordinated misinformation campaigns.”
