North East India Christian Council Condemns Killing of TBA Church Leaders, Appeals for Peace in Manipur

Shillong, May 14, 2026: The North East India Christian Council (NEICC) has strongly condemned the deadly ambush on church leaders of the Thadou Baptist Association India (TBAI) in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district, describing the attack as “tragic, distressing and cowardly.”

In an appeal for peace issued on May 13, the council said the ambush on vehicles carrying TBAI church leaders resulted in the killing of three pastors and injuries to several others amid the ongoing ethnic conflict in Manipur.

The NEICC expressed solidarity with the bereaved families, the injured and the TBAI community, while extending condolences and prayers for healing and strength.

“At this critical hour, the Council stands in solidarity with the bereaved families, the injured, and the TBAI as they mourn the loss of their leaders,” the statement read.

The council urged all communities in Manipur to maintain calm and uphold peace, justice and mutual respect. It also appealed to church leaders and religious organisations across Northeast India to avoid statements or actions that could further inflame tensions or escalate violence.

The NEICC further called upon Christian political leaders in the region to come together in a spirit of responsibility and statesmanship to help end the crisis and contribute towards rebuilding peace in Manipur.

Appealing to the Government of Manipur, the Government of India and concerned civil authorities, the council demanded firm action against those responsible for the violence and stressed the need to protect human life, uphold justice and strengthen the rule of law.

The statement was jointly issued by NEICC President Rev. S.R. Dkhar and General Secretary Rev. Dr. Ramengliana.

The ambush on the TBAI church leaders has triggered widespread condemnation from church bodies, civil society organisations and political leaders across the Northeast, with growing calls for justice and restoration of peace in Manipur.
