AIR Aizawl Marks 90 Years with Musical Concert, Honours Artists

Aizawl, May 5, 2026: All India Radio (AIR) Aizawl celebrated the 90th anniversary of All India Radio with a grand musical concert at the Central YMA Hall, Tuikhuahtlang, on Tuesday. The event brought together artists, cultural personalities, government officials, and music enthusiasts to commemorate nine decades of public broadcasting and AIR’s contribution to society, culture, and nation-building.

The programme was graced by B. Lalchhanzova, Minister for Information, Public Relations, Printing & Stationery (IPRP&S), as the Chief Guest. Addressing the gathering, the Minister congratulated AIR on reaching the significant milestone and praised the institution for its enduring service to the people of Mizoram and the country.

In his speech, Lalchhanzova highlighted the important role played by AIR in preserving and promoting Mizo language, culture, music, and identity over the decades. He noted that in an era of rapid globalization and cultural transformation, institutions like AIR continue to serve as guardians of indigenous traditions and values. The Minister emphasized the need to protect and promote local heritage for future generations and acknowledged AIR’s contribution in this regard.

Delivering the welcome address, D.R. Lalropuia, Director of AIR Aizawl, reflected on the history and evolution of All India Radio since its establishment. He noted that AIR has remained one of the country’s most trusted sources of information and communication since the pre-independence era. According to him, the broadcaster has consistently served as a bridge between the government and the public while playing a vital role in education, awareness, entertainment, and national integration.

Lalropuia also highlighted AIR’s continued relevance in the modern media landscape, stating that the organization remains committed to contributing to national development and supporting the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047 through responsible and inclusive broadcasting.

A major highlight of the anniversary celebration was the recognition of distinguished artists who have made significant contributions to AIR and the cultural life of Mizoram. During the programme, Top Grade Artist Vanhlupuii was honoured for her achievements and dedication to the arts. Several prominent ‘A’ Grade artists, including Laltlanthangi Pachuau, Siampuii Sailo, C. Vansanga, and Rualthankhuma Chhakchhuak, were also felicitated in recognition of their valuable contributions to music and broadcasting.

The event featured a series of vibrant musical performances by local artists, showcasing Mizoram’s rich musical heritage and artistic talent. The performances were warmly received by the audience and added a festive atmosphere to the celebration.

Established on June 8, 1936, All India Radio has grown into one of the largest broadcasting networks in the world. Today, AIR operates 230 stations across India, including the station in Aizawl, serving millions of listeners through a diverse range of programmes.

As part of the year-long anniversary celebrations, AIR Aizawl has planned several activities. A Walkathon will be organized on May 8, while the main commemorative event is scheduled to take place on June 8 at Vanapa Hall. The programme is expected to be attended by Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma and other dignitaries.

The anniversary celebration concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Biakchungnunga, Additional Director (Programme), AIR Aizawl, who expressed gratitude to artists, guests, staff members, and supporters for making the event a success.

The occasion served as a tribute to AIR’s enduring legacy and its continuing role in informing, educating, entertaining, and connecting communities across Mizoram and the nation.
