The Cabinet cleared the purchase of land to create land banks in East Garo Hills and North Garo Hills districts. In East Garo Hills, 93.59 acres will be acquired at a cost of ₹7 crore at Rongalgre, while 26 acres in North Garo Hills will be procured for ₹3.9 crore, located around 6.7 km from the Songsak–Mendipathar Road. Officials said these land banks will support future infrastructure projects and planned development initiatives.
In a separate decision, the Cabinet also approved amendments to the Meghalaya Building Bye Laws, 2021 (as amended), under the Special Projects category. The revised norms reduce the minimum plot size from 50,000 sq. ft. to 37,500 sq. ft. and the built-up area requirement from 20,000 sq. ft. to 15,000 sq. ft.

The changes are expected to make large-scale projects more inclusive, enabling more landowners to qualify. The move is aimed at encouraging multi-storey developments, attracting investment, generating employment, and ensuring more efficient use of urban land.
Officials stated that the combined decisions reflect the government’s focus on long-term infrastructure planning and sustainable urban growth in Meghalaya.
