Sohra (Meghalaya), April 30, 2026: A 15-year-old tourist from Uttar Pradesh was found dead after she was swept away by strong currents at Wei Sawdong Falls in Sohra, officials said.

The teenager, a resident of Firozabad district in Uttar Pradesh, had reportedly slipped and fallen into the waterfall around 11:30 AM on Wednesday while visiting the popular tourist destination with her parents and relatives.
According to police, the girl was standing near the edge of the scenic falls and attempting to take photographs when she lost her footing on the slippery surface and was carried away by the powerful current.
Authorities said information about the incident was received from the Sordar of Laitduh village, following which an immediate search operation was launched.

Personnel from the Search and Rescue Team (SRT), along with police and the Meghalaya Fire and Emergency Services, conducted extensive searches in the deep natural pools and surrounding areas of the waterfall. However, the operation had to be suspended after sunset on Wednesday.
Search operations resumed the following day, and the girl’s body was eventually recovered from the area. Police said the body has been sent for post-mortem examination.
Wei Sawdong Falls, located near Sohra (Cherrapunji), is known for its picturesque multi-tiered cascades and attracts a large number of tourists every year. Authorities have urged visitors to remain cautious near slippery edges and strong water currents at the site.
