Aizawl, April 23: Mizoram Governor General (Dr.) Vijay Kumar Singh (Retd.) on Wednesday met students and teachers of Shalom Special School, Serchhip, at the Durbar Hall of Lok Bhavan in Aizawl during their ongoing educational study tour. The Governor lauded the initiative undertaken by the Assam Rifles and emphasized the importance of exposure-based learning in helping students broaden their knowledge and experiences.

The students are currently participating in a study tour organised by the Serchhip Battalion of Assam Rifles, which commenced on April 13 and concludes on April 23, 2026. As part of the programme, the students have visited several important locations across the region, including Aizawl, Silchar, Shillong, and Cherrapunji, gaining opportunities to learn about different cultures, institutions, and environments beyond their regular classroom setting.
During the interaction, Governor Singh expressed appreciation to the Assam Rifles for taking the initiative to organise the educational tour for the specially-abled students. He noted that such programmes play a significant role in enhancing confidence, encouraging social interaction, and exposing students to new ideas and experiences that contribute to their personal growth.
The Governor remarked that education extends beyond textbooks and classrooms and that study tours offer valuable opportunities for experiential learning. He said visiting new places and interacting with different communities can help students develop a broader perspective of the world around them.
Singh also commended the teachers and parents of Shalom Special School for their unwavering dedication and commitment to the welfare and development of the students. He acknowledged the important role played by educators and families in nurturing children with special needs and ensuring that they receive the support necessary to achieve their full potential.
Expressing hope that the tour would have a lasting positive impact, the Governor encouraged the students to continue learning, exploring, and pursuing their aspirations with confidence. He said the experiences gained during the journey would help contribute to their personal development and enrich their educational journey.
The Governor further urged officials of the Assam Rifles to continue supporting Shalom Special School and similar institutions in the future. He highlighted the importance of collaboration between government agencies, security forces, educational institutions, and communities in promoting inclusive education and creating opportunities for specially-abled children.
During the meeting, the students presented a token of appreciation to the Governor as a gesture of gratitude. The interaction also provided an opportunity for the students to share their experiences from the tour, including the places they visited and the lessons they learned along the way. Teachers accompanying the students briefed the Governor about the school’s activities and its efforts to support children with special needs.

Shalom Special School holds a special place in the history of Serchhip district. The institution was established on August 17, 2005, by former Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla with the objective of providing educational opportunities and support services for specially-abled children. The foundation stone of the school’s present building was laid by Vijay Kumar Singh in January 2010 during his tenure as the Eastern Army Commander. The building was subsequently constructed by the 4th Assam Rifles under its Military Civic Action Programme, reflecting a long-standing association between the school and the security force.
At present, the school caters to 36 specially-abled students, providing education, training, and support aimed at fostering independence and improving quality of life. Officials noted that initiatives such as the study tour help create meaningful learning opportunities and encourage greater inclusion of children with special needs in society.
The visit concluded with the Governor conveying his best wishes to the students, teachers, and staff of Shalom Special School and expressing hope for the institution’s continued growth and success in the years ahead.
