Kuki Students’ Body Calls 24-Hour Shutdown in Churachandpur, Endorses Social Boycott of MLAs

Churachandpur, Feb 5: The Kuki Students’ Organisation, Churachandpur (KSO-CCP) on Wednesday announced a 24-hour total shutdown across Churachandpur district from midnight of February 6, in protest against the participation of certain Kuki-Zo MLAs in the formation of the Manipur government.

In a press release, the student body expressed appreciation for Kuki-Zo MLAs who refused to join the government, stating that their decision upheld the collective mandate for a Separate Administration and demonstrated political clarity, courage and fidelity to the aspirations of the people amid ongoing displacement and insecurity in the hill districts.

At the same time, KSO-CCP conveyed strong disapproval of legislators who, it alleged, had “betrayed” the community by participating in the government formation. The organisation said such participation violated resolutions adopted earlier at the NAMPI Conclave and undermined unity at a time when collective resolve was critical.

The student body also fully endorsed the social boycott declared by the Kuki-Zo Council (KZC) against Kuki-Zo MLAs who have joined the Manipur government, calling it a necessary step to protect collective dignity and political unity.

KSO-CCP said the shutdown would be observed peacefully and appealed to the public to cooperate, while exempting medical emergencies, media operations and essential humanitarian services. The organisation stressed that the protest was not partisan or vindictive, but a democratic expression of solidarity and conscience.

Meanwhile, the Kuki Women Organisation for Human Rights (KWOHR) has called for a mass public rally on February 6 to oppose the participation of Kuki-Zo MLAs in the formation of what it termed a “Meitei-dominated Manipur Popular Government.”

According to the appeal issued by KWOHR, the rally will begin at Koite Football Ground at 12:30 pm and converge at Peace Ground, Tuibong, followed by a public meeting. The organisation urged people to participate peacefully and in large numbers, reiterating demands for Separate Administration in the form of a Union Territory with Legislature.

The twin announcements come amid heightened political tensions in Manipur, with civil society organisations intensifying protests and mobilisations over the ongoing crisis and competing political positions.
