Apex Naga Bodies Warn of Historic Collapse Amid Factional Violence in Eastern Nagalim

Senapati, February 9: In an unprecedented and emotionally charged joint appeal, the United Naga Council (UNC), the All Naga Students’ Association, Manipur (ANSAM), and the Naga Women’s Union, Manipur (NWUM) have issued a stern warning that the ongoing factional violence between NSCN-YA and NSCN-AM in Eastern Nagalim could push the Naga political movement towards a historic collapse.

Expressing deep anguish and alarm, the apex bodies described the internecine conflict as far more than a law-and-order issue, calling it a moral, political, and historical catastrophe for the Naga people. They cautioned that a movement founded on unity, sacrifice, and collective conscience now stands on the brink of self-destruction from within.

“The Naga struggle was never meant to degenerate into fratricidal warfare,” the statement asserted, recalling how generations of Nagas endured persecution, displacement, and immense hardship in defence of their land, identity, and political rights. Allowing that legacy to be buried under internal rivalry, the bodies warned, would amount to a betrayal of history and a tragic undoing of the people’s collective dream.

The apex bodies bluntly identified factionalism as the most lethal enemy of the Naga political movement, noting that internal divisions have repeatedly weakened collective resolve, eroded moral authority, and allowed external forces to exploit a fractured polity. The present violence, they said, echoes the darkest chapters of Naga history, when brother turned against brother and the movement lost both direction and credibility.

Calling for an immediate and unconditional cessation of hostilities, the bodies urged both factions to abandon the politics of supremacy and rise to the higher responsibility of safeguarding the Naga future. They appealed for dialogue rooted in humility, forgiveness, and empathy, stressing that unity is not merely an option but a historical necessity.

The statement further underscored that no factional victory can justify the cost of Naga blood, and no political ambition should be allowed to destroy the collective destiny of the people. Reaffirming the primacy of shared Naga identity over factional loyalties, the bodies said only collective effort and essential unity can secure the historical and political rights of the Naga people.

Concluding with a powerful call for sanity and peace across the Naga homeland, the apex bodies vowed to continue striving for unity and justice beyond all rifts and differences.

The joint appeal was signed by UNC President N.G. Lorho, ANSAM President Th. Angteshang Maring, and NWUM President Ch. Priscilla Thiumai, ending with the call: “Let peace triumph over fratricide. Kuknalim!”
