Aizawl, Jan 26: Mizoram joined the rest of the nation in celebrating the 77th Republic Day of India with enthusiasm and solemnity, with the main state-level function held at Lammual Ground in Aizawl on Sunday morning.

Governor Vijay Kumar Singh, PVSM, AVSM, YSM (Retd), unfurled the National Flag at 9:00 am, following which parade contingents paid homage to the Tricolour. This was followed by the Governor’s Republic Day address.
Extending warm greetings to the people of Mizoram, the Governor recalled the adoption of the Constitution and reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to justice, liberty, equality and fraternity. He paid rich tributes to freedom fighters and martyrs who laid down their lives for India’s independence and emphasised the responsibility of citizens to uphold constitutional values and national unity.
Highlighting governance and development, the Governor spoke about the progress of the Hand Holding Scheme (Bana Kaih) and the CM Special Package Grant, with ₹350 crore allocated for Phase-II during the current financial year. He described the inauguration of the Bairabi–Sairang railway line in September 2025 as a historic milestone for the state and lauded Mizoram’s achievement of becoming India’s first fully literate state on May 20, 2025.
On law and order, he noted that Mizoram remains one of the most peaceful states in the country. Since April 2025, Mizoram Police have seized drugs worth ₹816 crore, arecanut worth ₹17.8 crore and 42 weapons, leading to 217 cases and 338 arrests. The Excise & Narcotics Department seized 474 kg of contraband drugs and implemented the Mizoram Liquor (Prohibition) Amendment Act, 2025, generating ₹1.69 crore in revenue.
The Governor also highlighted developments in public distribution, transport, tourism, healthcare, education and infrastructure. He noted the steady growth in tourism, with over four lakh visitors by October last year, and Mizoram’s recognition with the ‘Emerging Eco & Nature Retreat Award’ at the National Tourism Conclave. Progress under healthcare initiatives, including the Mizoram Universal Health Care Scheme, NQAS certifications and advanced diagnostic facilities, was also outlined.

The parade featured 24 contingents, including armed, unarmed and school contingents, along with three band parties. Pi Jessica Lallawmzuali, Dy SP (Legal), served as Parade Commander. In the armed category, contingents from 34 Assam Rifles, 1st Battalion MAP and 5th IR Battalion secured the top three positions.
During the ceremony, the Governor presented medals and awards to outstanding personnel from Police, Fire & Emergency Services and Mizoram Home Guard & Civil Defence, as well as cleanliness awards to urban towns and district headquarters.
Following the parade, the Governor hosted an ‘At Home’ reception at Circular Lawn, Lok Bhavan, for dignitaries, officials and special invitees, marking the conclusion of the Republic Day celebrations in the state.
