Aizawl, August 14, 2025: Mizoram Governor, General (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh, PVSM, AVSM, YSM (Retd), held an in-depth meeting with Secretary of the School Education Department, Pu David Lalthantluanga, and other senior officials at Raj Bhavan on Thursday to review the state’s education scenario, the implementation of central government schemes, and future strategies to enhance learning outcomes.
During the discussion, the Governor highlighted the indispensable role of quality education in shaping the next generation, describing students as the “future backbone of the nation.” He urged robust execution of central schemes and effective adoption of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 to raise educational standards across Mizoram.
Citing the Union government’s significant investments in premier educational institutions such as Eklavya Model Residential Schools, Kendriya Vidyalayas, Sainik Schools, and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas, General Singh called on the Mizo community to make full use of these facilities. He further stressed cultivating a passion for learning among students and ensuring equitable access to high-quality educational infrastructure.
Secretary Pu David Lalthantluanga presented a comprehensive overview of the department’s initiatives, including the introduction of common question papers for Classes 3, 6, and 9, curriculum improvements through well-structured lesson plans, and the contextualization of textbooks to improve learning relevance. He also shared that bilingual textbooks are being developed to support more effective instruction, alongside ongoing efforts to address teacher shortages and enhance teaching quality.
School Education Director Pi Angela Zothanpuii briefed the Governor on the successful operation of the PM Poshan-Mid Day Meal scheme, while State Project Director Pu C. Lalthanzira outlined the key elements of the Samagra Shiksha programme, which focuses on holistic educational development from primary to senior secondary levels.
The meeting also discussed the strategic rollout of central schemes, curriculum innovation, teacher training, and measures to increase community engagement in educational initiatives.
According to official data, Mizoram currently operates 4,418 schools - comprising 2,573 state government schools, 26 deficit schools, 340 government-aided schools, and 1,479 private institutions - catering to nearly three lakh students. Additionally, 35 PM SHRI schools are functional in the state.
