Aizawl, Aug 6, 2025: Mizoram has recorded the biometric enrollment of 887 migrants from Myanmar and Bangladesh since the exercise commenced on July 28, according to the state Home Department. The initiative is being implemented across all 11 districts of the state in compliance with directives issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to identify, document, and maintain records of foreign migrants residing in the state.
Officials said the enrollment process involves the collection of biometric data, including fingerprints and photographs, along with details regarding the migrants’ places of residence and employment. The exercise is aimed at creating a comprehensive database that will assist authorities in monitoring migrant populations and strengthening administrative oversight.
The enrollment drive initially focuses on migrants from Myanmar, many of whom entered Mizoram following political unrest and armed conflict in the neighbouring country. Authorities have stated that the exercise will soon be expanded to include migrants from Bangladesh as part of the broader documentation process.
District-wise data released by the Home Department indicates that Lawngtlai district has recorded the highest number of enrollments at 261. Lunglei follows with 103 registrations, while Siaha has registered 106 migrants. Other districts include Aizawl with 74 enrollments, Champhai with 7, Kolasib with 15, Serchhip with 67, Mamit with 33, Hnahthial with 53, Khawzawl with 80, and Saitual with 88.

Officials said the enrollment is being conducted in phases to ensure that all eligible migrants are covered. The process is also expected to provide the government with more accurate demographic data, enabling better planning and coordination of welfare measures, security monitoring, and administrative services where required.
The Home Department has urged concerned migrants to cooperate with authorities during the registration process. The biometric enrollment drive is expected to continue over the coming weeks until complete coverage is achieved across the state.
