Dibrugarh, July 1, 2026: Dibrugarh University on Wednesday celebrated its 62nd Foundation Day, commemorating more than six decades of excellence in higher education, research, innovation, and service to society. The occasion brought together students, faculty members, alumni, retired employees, affiliated college representatives, and distinguished guests to reflect on the university's rich legacy and its contributions to the academic and socio-cultural development of Assam and the Northeast.
The celebrations began with floral tributes to the statue of Late L.P. Dutta, one of the key figures associated with the establishment of the university. This was followed by the flag hoisting ceremony, marking the formal commencement of the Foundation Day programme.
The main event, the Foundation Day General Meeting, was held at the Rangghar Auditorium, where members of the Dibrugarh University fraternity gathered in large numbers to celebrate the institution's achievements over the past 62 years.
The programme was attended by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Jiten Hazarika, Registrar Dr. Paramananda Sonowal, and the university's senior-most professor, Prof. Nirajana Mahanta Bezborah, who shared the dais with the Guest of Honour, Padma Shri Awardee (2026) Smt. Pokhila Lekthepi.
The event commenced with the rendition of the Dibrugarh University Anthem, followed by the ceremonial lighting of the lamp by the dignitaries, symbolising the pursuit of knowledge and enlightenment.
A minute of silence was observed to pay homage to departed members of the Dibrugarh University fraternity in recognition of their invaluable contributions to the institution over the years.
During the programme, principals of several affiliated colleges were felicitated for their contribution to strengthening higher education and maintaining academic excellence under the university's jurisdiction.
One of the highlights of this year's Foundation Day celebration was the presence of Padma Shri Awardee (2026) Smt. Pokhila Lekthepi, whose lifelong contribution to preserving and promoting Karbi folk and modern music has earned her national recognition.

Widely regarded as a pioneer of modern Karbi music, Pokhila Lekthepi has dedicated more than four decades to preserving the cultural heritage of the Karbi community through music. Her artistic achievements and commitment to indigenous culture have inspired generations of musicians and cultural practitioners across Assam.
Her participation added special significance to the celebration, highlighting the university's commitment to promoting not only academic excellence but also the preservation of the region's rich cultural heritage.
Addressing the gathering, university authorities reaffirmed Dibrugarh University's commitment to advancing higher education through quality teaching, cutting-edge research, innovation, and community engagement.
Over the past six decades, the university has grown into one of the leading centres of higher learning in Northeast India, offering a wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral, and professional programmes while contributing significantly to research, skill development, and regional development.
As the institution enters its 63rd year, university leaders expressed confidence that Dibrugarh University would continue to nurture future generations of scholars, researchers, innovators, and leaders while strengthening its role in the socio-cultural and intellectual development of the nation.
The Foundation Day celebrations also drew greetings from across Assam.
Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu extended his heartfelt wishes to the students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the entire Dibrugarh University fraternity on the occasion.
In a message shared on social media, Pegu described Dibrugarh University as a distinguished centre of higher learning that has consistently nurtured knowledge, innovation, and academic excellence.
He noted that over the years, the university has made significant contributions to society through education, research, and human resource development.
