Dibrugarh, June 29: Professor Kalyan Bhuyan of the Department of Physics at Dibrugarh University has been conferred the prestigious Education Eminence 2026 award by News18 Assam in recognition of his exceptional contributions to higher education, academic leadership, scientific research, literature, and translation.
The award was presented during a grand ceremony held on June 28, 2026, at Clubway Grand, a luxury hotel on Club Road in Jorhat. The honour was bestowed upon Professor Bhuyan by Union Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita and Member of Parliament Kamakhya Prasad Tasa in the presence of News18 Assam Northeast Editor-in-Chief Paragmoni Aditya. Assam legislators Dhiraj Gowala and Rupjyoti Kurmi also attended the event.
The recognition highlights Professor Bhuyan's distinguished career as an educator, researcher, administrator, and literary figure, making him one of the most respected academics in the region.
According to News18 Assam, Professor Bhuyan has made significant contributions to the field of physics through pioneering research in cosmology, black hole physics, and atmospheric science. His recent work has increasingly focused on integrating machine learning and artificial intelligence into complex scientific research, helping advance understanding in these emerging interdisciplinary fields.
One of his most notable research achievements has been his collaborative work examining how the properties of black holes change in the presence of exotic forms of dark matter. The study has attracted considerable attention from the international scientific community for its innovative approach and potential implications in modern astrophysics.
Professor Bhuyan's academic leadership has also played an important role in enhancing the reputation of Dibrugarh University's Department of Physics. Based on research performance indicators compiled over the past year by the internationally acclaimed scientific journal Nature, the department secured the seventh position nationally among India's leading academic institutions in the field of physics research—a significant milestone that reflects the department's growing research excellence.
Beyond the world of science, Professor Bhuyan has earned widespread recognition as a distinguished translator, poet, editor, and short story writer. His literary contributions have helped introduce Assamese readers to some of the world's most influential works.
Among his acclaimed translations are the Assamese edition of Ismat Chughtai's autobiography Kaghazi Hai Pairahan, published as Tulapatar Aabharan; Yuval Noah Harari's internationally celebrated Sapiens; Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen's memoir Home in the World, translated into Assamese as Prithibiyei Mor Ghar; and Geetanjali Shree's Booker Prize-winning novel Ret Samadhi, published in Assamese under the title Bali Samadhi.
Professor Bhuyan has also authored the poetry collection Goru Aru Ananya Kabita (The Cow and Other Poems) and has contributed significantly as an editor to several important literary publications, further enriching Assamese literature.
According to the organisers, the Education Eminence 2026 award celebrates Professor Bhuyan's remarkable achievements across multiple disciplines, recognising his sustained excellence in teaching, scientific innovation, academic administration, literature, and translation.
