The announcement was made at the party headquarters, Hnam Run, Aizawl, by MNF Senior Vice President Dr. R. Lalthangliana, who said the party had unanimously chosen Zothansangi Hmar, a member of the MNF General Headquarters Legal Board, to represent the party in the election scheduled for June 18.
Following the announcement, Zothansangi Hmar filed her nomination papers before Returning Officer Zothansanga Ralte, Commissioner and Secretary of the Mizoram Legislative Assembly. Her nomination comes days after the ruling Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) fielded its candidate, K. Laltluangkima, who submitted his nomination papers last week.
A respected legal practitioner and public affairs commentator, Zothansangi Hmar brings a diverse professional background to the contest. She is the daughter of late advocate Rualkhuma Hmar and Rosangzuali and is a resident of College Veng, Aizawl. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Political Science and an LL.B. degree and has been practicing law since 2015.
During the first MNF government tenure, she served as an Assistant Public Prosecutor before transitioning into private legal practice. She currently co-manages a law firm with advocate Saihmingliana Sailo and remains actively involved in legal advocacy and public service.
Apart from her legal career, Zothansangi has earned recognition for her contributions to public discourse and literature. She has authored numerous articles on social, political, and community issues in newspapers and magazines. In 2015, she won first prize in an essay competition organized by the Mizoram Information Commission on the theme of the Right to Information (RTI) and Mizo society.
The same year, she translated Arvind Kejriwal's book Swaraj into Mizo under the title Mahnia Ro Inrel. Published in 2016, the translation was later acknowledged as one of Mizoram's notable translated works.
Her involvement in community organizations has also been significant. She previously served as an Executive Member of the College Veng branch of the Young Mizo Association (YMA) and contributed to the publication and management of several local and church newsletters. Currently, she serves as Treasurer of the MNF Legal Board and acts as Legal Adviser to both the Mizoram Hindi Board and the Mizo YouTuber Association.
Political observers note that Zothansangi's candidature also carries the weight of a strong political legacy. Her grandfather, the late Thanghuta, served as a Senator in the erstwhile Mizoram Underground Government, while her father, the late Rualkhuma Hmar, held several senior positions within the MNF, including Adviser and Chairman of the party's Legal Board.
According to the Election Commission of India, scrutiny of nomination papers will take place on June 9, while June 11 has been fixed as the last date for withdrawal of candidature. If required, polling will be conducted on June 18 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with counting scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. on the same day.
With both the MNF and ZPM having formally nominated their candidates, the Rajya Sabha election is expected to attract considerable political attention as Mizoram prepares to elect its next representative to Parliament's Upper House.
