Assam Government Allocates Portfolios to 16-Member Council of Ministers

Guwahati, June 8: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday announced the allocation of portfolios to members of the Assam Council of Ministers, assigning responsibilities across key sectors ranging from education and health to infrastructure, agriculture, industry, and welfare.

The portfolio distribution follows the recent expansion and reorganization of the state cabinet and is aimed at ensuring efficient governance and effective implementation of development programmes across Assam.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma retained several important departments, including Home and Political, Public Works Department (Buildings and National Highways), Public Works Department (Roads), Power, Information and Public Relations, Printing and Stationery, as well as other departments not allocated to any minister.

Among the senior ministers, Ashok Singhal was entrusted with Health and Family Welfare, Medical Education and Research. Atul Bora received Panchayat and Rural Development, Implementation of Assam Accord, Border Protection and Development, and Excise.

Ajanta Neog was assigned Women and Child Development and Tourism, while Bimal Borah took charge of Cultural Affairs, Industries, Commerce and Public Enterprises, and Act East Policy Affairs.

Ashwini Ray Sarkar was allocated Social Justice and Empowerment, Soil Conservation, and Welfare of Minorities and Development. Biswajit Daimary was entrusted with Handloom, Textiles and Sericulture, Sports and Youth Welfare, Skill, Employment and Entrepreneurship, and Indigenous and Tribal Faith and Culture.

Charan Boro was given Transport and Welfare of Bodoland, while Jayanta Malla Baruah retained Finance, Environment and Forest, and Mines and Minerals.

Among the newly inducted ministers, Kaushik Rai was assigned Food, Public Distribution and Consumer Affairs, Housing and Urban Affairs, and Cooperation. Keshab Mahanta received Revenue and Disaster Management, Science, Technology and Climate Change, and General Administration.

Krishnendu Paul was allocated Public Health Engineering, Hill Areas, and Barak Valley Development. Nilima Devi was entrusted with Animal Husbandry, Veterinary and Fishery.

Pijush Hazarika took charge of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Parliamentary Affairs, while Dr. Ranoj Pegu was assigned School Education, Higher Education, Tribal Affairs (Plain), and Information Technology.

Rameswar Teli received Transformation and Development, Labour Welfare, and Tea Tribes and Adivasi Welfare. Sushanta Borgohain was entrusted with Water Resources and Judicial departments.

The allocation of portfolios comes at a crucial time as the state government intensifies efforts to accelerate infrastructure development, improve public services, strengthen agricultural productivity, generate employment opportunities, and promote industrial growth. The cabinet composition reflects a balance of experienced leaders and newly inducted ministers tasked with implementing the government's development agenda across various sectors.

Officials stated that the distribution of responsibilities is expected to enhance administrative efficiency and facilitate coordinated policymaking as Assam pursues its goals of economic growth, social welfare, and sustainable development. The newly assigned ministers are expected to assume charge of their respective departments immediately and begin reviewing ongoing projects and policy priorities.
