The encounter took place during a night-long operation in a thickly forested area near Songking village under Miao police station near the India-Myanmar border.

According to security sources, the operation was launched based on specific intelligence inputs regarding the presence and movement of NSCN militants in the region. The militants were reportedly camping in the area and allegedly involved in extortion activities targeting local villagers.

Sources said residents of nearby villages had been facing continuous pressure from militants demanding extortion money, prompting security agencies to intensify surveillance and launch the operation.

During the search operation, Assam Rifles personnel reportedly came under heavy fire from the militants, triggering a fierce exchange of gunfire that continued through the night.

Two militants were killed in the operation, while a large cache of arms and ammunition was recovered from the encounter site, officials said. However, the identities of the deceased militants have not yet been officially released.

Security forces have launched extensive search operations in the surrounding forested areas amid suspicion that more militants may still be hiding nearby.

Officials said the operation was conducted in a dense and strategically sensitive region near the India-Myanmar border, where insurgent movements and infiltration attempts have remained a concern.

Meanwhile, another exchange of fire was also reported near Chop village under Wakka circle in Longding district. No casualties were reported in that incident.

Security agencies are closely monitoring the situation across the Tirap-Changlang-Longding (TCL) region, particularly amid ongoing discussions related to border fencing and cross-border militant activities.
