Shillong, May 12: The National People’s Party (NPP) has strongly condemned remarks made by North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC) Chief Executive Member Debolal Garlosa, accusing him of making “false, malicious, and politically motivated” statements against the party during the NCHAC Platinum Jubilee celebrations in Haflong on May 11.
In a press statement issued by NPP National Working President James P. K. Sangma, the party rejected allegations branding the NPP as anyone’s “B-team,” calling the claim baseless and politically motivated.
The statement asserted that the NPP is an independent national political party with its own ideology, leadership, and organisational structure, and does not require approval or direction from any other political party while contesting elections.
“The National People’s Party is not, has never been, and will never be anyone’s ‘B-team’,” the statement said.
The party clarified that its decision to field Daniel Langthasa as the NPP candidate from Haflong (ST) in the 2026 Assam Assembly elections was taken independently after internal consultations and was based on its commitment to protecting tribal rights and strengthening constitutional safeguards under the Sixth Schedule.
The NPP also denied allegations suggesting any understanding or political arrangement with the BJP regarding the decision.
The statement further termed as “outright fabrication” claims allegedly linking discussions involving Meghalaya Chief Minister and NPP national president Conrad K. Sangma to the party’s electoral decisions in Dima Hasao.
According to the NPP, making such allegations without evidence was irresponsible, defamatory, and unbecoming of a person holding constitutional office.
The party accused Garlosa of diverting attention from genuine public concerns related to governance and development by engaging in misinformation and political attacks.
The NPP also criticised what it described as attempts to delegitimise political opponents through conspiracy theories and propaganda rather than democratic discourse.

Demanding immediate action, the party called on Debolal Garlosa to publicly retract his statements and issue an unconditional apology within 48 hours through the same media channels.
The statement warned that failure to do so would compel the party to explore legal remedies, including defamation proceedings against him in his personal capacity.
Reaffirming its political stand, the NPP stated that it remains committed to democracy, tribal rights, constitutional protections, and the development aspirations of the hill people of Dima Hasao.
