Gangtok, May 12: Madhu Mala Gurung, Senior Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (ANM) at Rangpo Primary Health Centre under District Hospital Pakyong in East Sikkim, has been honoured with the prestigious Florence Nightingale Award 2026 for her outstanding contribution to healthcare services.
The award recognises exceptional dedication and service by nursing professionals towards public health and community welfare across the country.
Gurung was recognised for nearly four decades of service in the healthcare sector, particularly for her contributions to healthcare delivery among tribal and indigenous communities in Sikkim.
Her role during the COVID-19 pandemic and her efforts in responding to natural disasters, including floods, were also specially acknowledged during the award presentation.

Officials praised her disciplined and compassionate approach to patient care, noting that her dedication and people-centric service earned appreciation from both district and state health authorities.
The Florence Nightingale Award is considered one of India’s highest honours for nursing professionals and is presented annually by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to recognise excellence, compassion, and commitment in patient care.

During the ceremony, President Droupadi Murmu lauded the nursing fraternity for their invaluable role in strengthening India’s healthcare system and said nurses continue to exemplify the highest standards of service despite working under challenging conditions.
