Guwahati, May 12: BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma was on Tuesday sworn in as the Chief Minister of Assam for a second consecutive term, marking the return of the BJP-led NDA government in the state after a sweeping electoral victory.
Governor
Lakshman Prasad Acharya administered the oath of office and secrecy to Sarma
and four other ministers during a grand ceremony held at the Veterinary College
ground in Khanapara, Guwahati.
Prime
Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, several Union ministers,
chief ministers from NDA-ruled states, diplomats, and other dignitaries
attended the swearing-in ceremony.
Along
with Sarma, BJP leaders Rameswar Teli and Ajanta Neog, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP)
president Atul Bora, and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) leader Charan Boro also
took oath as ministers.
Ajanta
Neog, Atul Bora, and Charan Boro were members of Sarma’s previous cabinet,
handling the finance, agriculture, and transport portfolios respectively.
Former Union Minister Rameswar Teli made his debut in the Assam state ministry
after returning to active state politics.
The NDA
secured a massive mandate in the recently concluded Assam Assembly elections,
winning 102 seats in the 126-member Assembly. The BJP alone won 82 seats, while
alliance partners AGP and BPF secured 10 seats each.
This
marks the third consecutive NDA government in Assam since the alliance first
came to power in 2016 under the leadership of current Union Minister Sarbananda
Sonowal.
Following
the ceremony, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Sarma and the newly
sworn-in ministers. He also greeted party workers, supporters, and leaders
gathered at the venue.
US
Ambassador to India Sergio Gor, who attended the event, said he was honoured to
witness the swearing-in ceremony and highlighted the growing commercial ties
between Assam and the United States.
“Assam
and the United States have many commercial ties, and with the CM’s leadership
we will identify many more win-win scenarios for both of our nations,” he said
in a social media post.
In a
message shared after taking oath, Himanta Biswa Sarma described the occasion as
an “extremely emotional moment” and expressed gratitude to the people of Assam
for reposing faith in the NDA government.
