Thenzawl, May 1, 2026: Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma on Thursday visited storm-affected areas in Thenzawl and distributed relief assistance to families whose homes and properties were damaged by strong winds and heavy rainfall that struck the town earlier this week. The relief was provided through the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) and the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund as part of the government’s efforts to support affected residents and help them recover from the disaster.

During his visit, the Chief Minister personally met families impacted by the storm and handed over financial assistance and relief support. He also inspected several affected localities, including Kanan Veng and Tualvungi Veng, where he interacted with residents and assessed the extent of the destruction caused by the severe weather.
According to officials, the storm hit Thenzawl at around 4:00 pm on April 27, bringing powerful winds accompanied by heavy rainfall. The sudden weather event caused widespread damage to homes, public infrastructure, and electricity networks across the town.
Preliminary assessments conducted by the local administration revealed that eight houses were severely damaged and rendered uninhabitable, forcing affected families to seek temporary shelter. In addition, nine houses sustained major damage, while 54 other houses suffered partial damage as a result of the storm.
The disaster also affected public infrastructure. Officials reported that 13 government and community buildings were damaged, disrupting normal activities in some areas. The strong winds further caused the collapse of 15 electric poles, resulting in power outages and disruptions to electricity supply in several parts of Thenzawl.
While reviewing the damage, the Chief Minister assured residents that the state government would continue to provide necessary assistance to those affected. He emphasized that the welfare of citizens remains a priority and that relief measures would be implemented to help families rebuild their homes and restore normalcy.
Lalduhoma also commended the efforts of local authorities, emergency responders, and community members who worked together in the immediate aftermath of the storm. He noted that timely response and cooperation among various agencies helped prevent further hardship and ensured that assistance reached affected households quickly.
Officials accompanying the Chief Minister briefed him on the ongoing restoration efforts, including repairs to damaged infrastructure and the restoration of electricity services. Authorities are continuing assessments to determine the full extent of losses and identify additional support required by affected families.
The Chief Minister was accompanied during the visit by SDO (Civil) Thenzawl K. Lalhlimpuia, DIPRO Serchhip R. Vanneihtluanga, and other local leaders and officials. The delegation inspected several damaged sites and reviewed the progress of relief and recovery operations.

Residents welcomed the visit and expressed appreciation for the prompt assistance provided by the government. Many affected families said the relief would help them begin repairing damaged homes and replacing essential belongings lost during the storm.
Officials stated that the government will continue monitoring the situation closely and ensure that all eligible families receive appropriate support. Further assistance may be provided based on detailed damage assessments and evolving needs on the ground.
The incident highlights the vulnerability of many parts of Mizoram to extreme weather events, particularly during periods of intense rainfall and strong winds. Authorities have urged residents to remain alert and follow safety advisories as weather conditions continue to be monitored across the state.
