Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma announced that the Cabinet approved the decision, making Meghalaya the 23rd state in India to designate an official state fish.
Locally known as “Khasaw” in Khasi and “Na-rang” in Garo, the Chocolate Mahseer is native to the region’s freshwater ecosystems. The move aims to promote conservation of indigenous species, protect aquatic habitats, and preserve traditional ecological knowledge associated with the fish.

Officials said Meghalaya previously did not have an officially designated state fish, and the decision reflects a growing focus on safeguarding the state’s rich natural heritage.
The government hopes the recognition will raise awareness about sustainable fishing practices and strengthen conservation efforts across rivers and water bodies in the state.
