Manipur CM Calls Kamjong Border Violence “Deeply Concerning and Unacceptable”

Imphal, May 7: Manipur Chief Minister Khemchand Yumnam on Thursday strongly condemned the violence reported in the border villages of Namlee, Z. Choro, and Wanglee in Kamjong district amid fresh tension along the Indo-Myanmar border.

Fresh tension erupted in the area on Thursday morning after alleged armed militants linked to the Kuki National Army-Burma (KNA-B) reportedly launched attacks on villages in the Wanglee–Namlee–Choro belt near the Myanmar border. According to reports from the ground, several houses, including the residence of a village headman in Namlee village, were set ablaze, forcing villagers to flee into nearby forest areas for safety.

Videos circulating on social media showed smoke rising from hill slopes as residents, including women and children, fled the affected areas amid sounds of gunfire and explosions. One civilian was reportedly injured in the violence, though no fatalities had been officially confirmed at the time of reporting.

In a statement issued on social media, the Chief Minister described the incidents as “deeply concerning and unacceptable” and said he was closely monitoring the situation.

Khemchand Yumnam stated that security forces have been directed to take all necessary measures to restore peace and prevent any further escalation in the affected villages.

“The Government remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens, and strict action will be taken against those responsible,” the Chief Minister said.

Meanwhile, the Kuki National Army-Burma (KNA-B) denied allegations linking the group to the reported attacks and arson, calling the accusations “false and malicious.” The group claimed it was not involved in any activities within Indian territory and appealed against escalating the situation into an ethnic conflict.

Security agencies were yet to issue an official statement on the incident at the time of filing this report.
