Gangtok, May 24: The Bar Association of Sikkim, High Court and Subordinate Courts, has extended heartfelt congratulations to Justice Meenakshi Madan Rai following the recommendation of the Supreme Court Collegium to appoint her as the next Chief Justice of the Patna High Court after the retirement of the incumbent Chief Justice on June 4, 2026.
In an official statement, the Bar Association described the recommendation as a historic and monumental milestone not only for Sikkim but also for the Indian judiciary. Justice Meenakshi Madan Rai, who became the first woman judge of the High Court of Sikkim, has now created history once again with her proposed elevation to lead one of the country’s oldest and most prestigious High Courts.
The Association stated that the development comes at a particularly symbolic moment as Sikkim marks 51 years of statehood within the Indian Union. It termed the recommendation a matter of immense pride for the people of Sikkim and a recognition of the talent, integrity and judicial excellence nurtured in the state.
Expressing gratitude to the Supreme Court Collegium, the Bar Association said Justice Rai’s distinguished judicial career, legal acumen and unwavering commitment to justice made her highly deserving of the elevation. The statement praised her tenure on the bench as one marked by compassion, constitutional wisdom and exemplary dedication to the rule of law.

The Association further noted that Justice Rai has served as an inspiration for the legal fraternity, especially for young lawyers and women in the region aspiring to enter the judiciary and legal profession.
While celebrating the recommendation, the Bar Association also expressed hope that the elevation would pave the way for Justice Rai’s future appointment to the Supreme Court of India. It said the legal fraternity of Sikkim stands united in pride and extends prayers and best wishes for her successful and impactful tenure as Chief Justice of the Patna High Court.
Justice Meenakshi Madan Rai currently serves as a judge of the High Court of Sikkim and is widely respected for her contributions to jurisprudence and judicial administration.
