Imphal, May 24: Yumnam Khemchand Singh, Chief Minister of Manipur, on Sunday said that India’s sports sector is incomplete without the contribution of players from Manipur, while inaugurating a newly constructed Multipurpose Indoor Hall at Charoipung Playground in Mayang-Imphal under the Khelo India Scheme.

Addressing players, coaches and local residents at the inauguration programme, the Chief Minister highlighted the immense contribution of Manipuri athletes to Indian sports and said sports in Manipur are also incomplete without players from the Mayang-Imphal constituency.
“Once a player, always a player,” the Chief Minister said, encouraging young athletes to continue pursuing sports despite challenges and hardships in life.
During the visit, Yumnam Khemchand Singh also provided financial assistance of Rs. 1 lakh to a member of an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) family facing serious health issues at the relief camp located at Pravabati College in Mayang-Imphal, around 26 kilometres from Imphal city. The visit formed part of the government’s ongoing efforts to support displaced families affected by the ongoing crisis in the state.
Responding to demands raised by local MLA Kongkham Robindro Singh, the Chief Minister assured the public that a football turf would be constructed in the area. He also announced that funds for boys’ and girls’ hostels for players would be earmarked in the state budget and that construction of an approach road would soon begin.
The Chief Minister further stated that the unprecedented crisis in Manipur had affected all communities and urged people to move forward together towards peace and development. He also encouraged the formation of Self Help Groups (SHGs), noting that the government had sanctioned nearly Rs. 350 crore to support such initiatives.

During the programme, commendation certificates and plaques were distributed to players and coaches who brought laurels to the state. The Chief Minister also announced that the indoor stadium would remain open for public use.
Later, Yumnam Khemchand Singh inaugurated a 100-bedded girls’ hostel, classrooms, a library and a science and craft block at Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) in Heigum Yangbi, Mayang-Imphal, in Imphal West district.
The Chief Minister also visited the under-construction 100-bedded hospital under Wangoi Sub-Division and assured local residents that the hospital would soon become operational.
