The meeting was held in the presence of Director General of Police (DGP) Harmeet Singh, IPS, with virtual participation from District Commissioners, Superintendents of Police and officials from various concerned departments across the state.

During the meeting, officials informed that Assam recorded a 15 per cent reduction in road accidents and nearly a 30 per cent decline in fatalities between April 28 and May 21, 2026, compared to the corresponding period last year.

The Chief Secretary directed district administrations to intensify enforcement in accident-prone areas and prepare district-specific intervention plans based on accident data and local risk assessments. Observing that National Highways account for the largest share of accidents in Assam, districts were instructed to identify black spots and strengthen enforcement, engineering corrections and emergency response systems.

Strict action was also ordered against unauthorised roadside parking, illegal truck halting and encroachments along highways and major roads.

The meeting further reviewed implementation of the PM RAHAT initiative aimed at strengthening trauma care and emergency response for accident victims. In line with the directions of Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, districts were asked to improve coordination, expand first responder training programmes and strengthen public awareness on road safety and “golden hour” response mechanisms.

The Transport Department informed the meeting about key initiatives including the “Zero Fatality District” programme, the “Chota COP” road safety awareness campaign and expansion of Automated Driver Testing Tracks to improve transparency in driving licence issuance.
