Pakyong, April 13: A training programme on “AI for Disaster Management” was launched on Monday at St. Xavier’s School in Pakyong, aimed at strengthening the use of artificial intelligence in disaster preparedness and response.
The programme was inaugurated by Rohan Agawane under the District Administrative Centre (DAC), Pakyong. The training will run from April 13 to April 21 and brings together officials to explore the application of modern technology in disaster management.
The training is being conducted by Dinesh Dhungel, who will deliver a 15-hour module on the use of Artificial Intelligence tools in disaster management.
Around 50 officials, including Disaster Management Coordinators, Supervisors, and Assistants, are participating in the programme. The sessions aim to build capacity among officials by integrating AI tools into disaster management practices, focusing on preparedness, response, and mitigation.
The training will introduce participants to several digital tools and platforms, including ChatGPT for drafting alerts and disaster plans, Google Earth Engine for satellite-based monitoring, QGIS for spatial analysis, NASA Worldview for real-time disaster tracking, and Global Forest Watch for environmental monitoring. Simulation-based decision-making exercises will also form part of the training.
Addressing participants, Agawane highlighted the growing role of technology in administration and disaster management and urged officials to develop the necessary skills to effectively use AI tools. He encouraged participants to actively engage in the sessions and take advantage of the training opportunity.

Officials from the district administration and IT department, including District Planning Officer TR Chettri and Assistant Director (IT) Nirnai Rai, also attended the programme.
The initiative is being conducted as a pilot project in Pakyong district, with plans to expand similar training to more officials based on the outcome of the programme.
