The meeting was chaired by Pu Zahmingthanga Ralte, Additional Secretary of the Law & Judicial Department, who heads the Review Committee tasked with examining the law following its passage in the 2026 Assembly session.

The amendment has sparked diverse opinions among the public in Mizoram, including both support and criticism. In response, the state government constituted the review committee to carefully examine the concerns and suggestions raised by various groups.

Among the issues discussed were letters submitted by Mizo Hmeichhe Insuihkhawm Pawl (MHIP) to the Assembly Speaker expressing dissatisfaction with the law, as well as recommendations from the Val Upa Council addressed to the Chief Minister.

Ralte stated that while some concerns raised appear valid, many criticisms stem from misunderstandings about the provisions of the law. The amendment, published in the Mizoram Gazette on March 6, 2026, came into immediate effect.

He clarified that under the law, individuals who have separated from their spouse must obtain a divorce certificate from the court before remarrying. Failure to do so could lead to legal action under Section 82 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which carries penalties including imprisonment of up to seven years and fines.

The meeting was attended by representatives from several organizations, including the Council of Churches in Mizoram (CCM), Mizoram Kohhran Hruaitute Committee (MKHC), Mizo Language Development Board, MHIP Headquarters, Mizo Upa Pawl (MUP), the Women Commission, the Bar Association, and other experts.

Participants were urged to deliberate carefully on the matter, as the law affects families and individuals across Mizoram, with the aim of arriving at well-considered recommendations in future meetings.
