Gangtok, April 22, 2026: Swift rescue operations were launched in Sikkim after sudden heavy snowfall disrupted traffic and stranded tourists and local residents in parts of East Sikkim on Tuesday.

Multiple agencies, including the Indian Army, General Reserve Engineer Force (GREF), Sikkim Police, and the Sikkim Tourism & Civil Aviation Department, carried out coordinated operations to assist stranded travellers and residents, including elderly individuals affected by prolonged traffic congestion.
Officials said rescue teams acted quickly to provide assistance, regulate vehicular movement and ensure the safety of people caught in the adverse weather conditions. Tourism stakeholders and local volunteers also joined the operation to help manage the situation.

Authorities stated that the timely intervention and coordination among the agencies helped prevent further escalation and ensured the well-being of all those affected.
Following the rescue efforts, normal traffic movement was successfully restored along the vital JNM Axis, a key route connecting the region.
The Tourism & Civil Aviation Department expressed appreciation to the Indian Army, Sikkim Police, GREF, tourism stakeholders and volunteers for their prompt response and cooperation in handling the emergency situation.
