Haflong, April 30, 2026: The North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC), now known as the Dima Hasao Autonomous Council (DHAC), has completed 75 years of its establishment, marking a historic milestone in the governance and socio-economic development of Assam's Dima Hasao district. The Platinum Jubilee celebrations are scheduled to be held on May 11, with year-long commemorative programmes planned to honour the council's legacy.

The autonomous council was established on April 29, 1952, under Article 244(2) read with the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution of India, with the objective of safeguarding the interests of indigenous tribal communities, promoting self-governance, and ensuring balanced development in the hill areas of Assam.
Over the past seven and a half decades, the council has evolved into one of the state's most important autonomous institutions. Initially entrusted with only a limited number of administrative subjects, the council's responsibilities have expanded significantly over the years. Today, the Dima Hasao Autonomous Council administers 32 subjects, covering key sectors such as education, healthcare, agriculture, rural development, forests, public works, culture, and local governance, reflecting its growing role in the administration and development of the hill district.
On the occasion of the 75th anniversary, Chairman Mohet Hojai extended his warm greetings to the people of Dima Hasao and called upon residents from all communities to participate in the Platinum Jubilee celebrations. He described the milestone as a proud moment for the district and an opportunity to reflect on the council's contributions towards preserving tribal identity, strengthening democratic decentralisation, and improving the quality of life of the people.

Although the official Foundation Day falls on April 29, the main Platinum Jubilee celebration has been rescheduled to May 11 due to the Model Code of Conduct currently being in force. Authorities said the necessary permission has been obtained to organise the event, although certain conditions have been imposed, including restrictions on the participation of political leaders to ensure compliance with election guidelines.
The Platinum Jubilee celebrations are expected to feature cultural programmes, exhibitions, public gatherings, and events highlighting the history and achievements of the autonomous council since its establishment. The year-long observance will celebrate the council's role in promoting peace, preserving the rich cultural heritage of Dima Hasao's indigenous communities, and advancing inclusive development in the hill district.
Chairman Hojai urged people from all walks of life to actively participate in the celebrations, expressing confidence that the Platinum Jubilee would inspire a renewed commitment towards strengthening self-governance and accelerating the overall development of Dima Hasao.
