Aizawl, April 29, 2026: The Mizoram Upa Pawl (MUP), one of the largest organizations representing senior citizens in the state, held its 51st General Assembly at Vanapa Hall, Aizawl, on Tuesday. The event brought together elderly members, community leaders, and government officials to review the organization’s activities and discuss issues concerning the welfare and well-being of senior citizens.

The programme was attended by Lalzarmawii, Secretary of the Social Welfare, Women and Child Development Department, who graced the occasion as the chief guest. Addressing the gathering, she paid tribute to the immense contributions made by senior citizens to families, churches, communities, and society as a whole. She acknowledged their role in shaping Mizoram’s social and cultural values and thanked them for their continued guidance and service.
Lalzarmawii highlighted several initiatives undertaken by the government for the welfare of elderly citizens. She noted that the Old Age Pension had been increased to ₹1,000 per month, describing the enhancement as an important measure aimed at providing greater financial support to senior citizens. She said the government remains committed to improving the quality of life of elderly people across the state.
The Secretary also expressed optimism regarding the completion of the Multi Service Centre at Zemabawk, a project being developed under the Ministry of Tribal Affairs and intended to be managed by the MUP General Headquarters. According to her, the facility will provide valuable services and support for senior citizens once completed.
In addition, she informed the gathering that efforts are underway to improve facilities at the old age home located at Ainawn Veng, which is administered under the Social Welfare Department. The government, she said, is working to strengthen care and support systems for elderly residents.
Lalzarmawii further assured members that pension benefits under the National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP), funded jointly by the Central and State Governments, are being processed with the aim of ensuring timely disbursement to beneficiaries. She emphasized that the welfare of senior citizens remains a priority area for the department.
The Secretary also appreciated the cooperation extended by the Mizoram Upa Pawl to various government programmes and expressed hope that the partnership between the organization and the government would continue to grow stronger in the future. She noted that such collaboration plays an important role in promoting social welfare, community development, and support for vulnerable sections of society.
A significant part of the assembly was dedicated to honouring elderly citizens who have reached the remarkable age of 100 years. MUP officials reported that 10 centenarians were felicitated during 2025 with citations and a cash award of ₹1,000 each. Since the initiative began in 2010, the organization has honoured a total of 236 centenarians, recognizing their longevity and contributions to society.

The event also included a solemn condolence session in memory of 1,945 members who passed away during the reporting period. Participants observed the occasion with respect and remembrance, acknowledging the contributions of deceased members to their families and communities.
According to MUP officials, the organization currently has a membership strength of 70,102 members and operates through 13 branches, including one branch located in the Jampui area of Tripura. The association continues to play a significant role in advocating for the rights and welfare of senior citizens in Mizoram and beyond.
The 51st General Assembly concluded with renewed calls for stronger support systems for the elderly and a shared commitment to ensuring that senior citizens continue to live with dignity, respect, and security in society.
