Aizawl, April 28, 2026: Authorities in Mizoram have ordered the closure of all schools in Aizawl district on Tuesday as a precautionary measure following continuous heavy rainfall that has increased the risk of landslides, mudflows, and rockfalls in several parts of the district.

The order was issued by the Deputy Commissioner of Aizawl district, Er. Lalhriatpuia, IAS, through an official notification from the Office of the Deputy Commissioner. The directive comes amid concerns that persistent rainfall over the past few hours has significantly heightened the possibility of natural disasters, particularly in vulnerable and hilly areas of the district.
According to the notification, all educational institutions, including primary schools, middle schools, high schools, and higher secondary schools, have been directed to remain closed on April 28, 2026. The decision was taken with the safety and well-being of students as the primary consideration.
Officials stated that the district administration has been closely monitoring weather conditions and assessing the risks posed by the ongoing rainfall. Given the terrain of Aizawl district and the history of rain-induced disasters in the region, authorities determined that suspending classes for a day was necessary to prevent students and school staff from being exposed to potential hazards.
The Deputy Commissioner noted that continuous rainfall could trigger landslides, mudslides, mudflows, and falling rocks in several locations, particularly along roads, steep slopes, and other vulnerable areas. Such incidents could endanger commuters and disrupt transportation networks used by students traveling to and from schools.
The closure order was issued under the powers vested in the Deputy Commissioner under Section 30(v) read with Section 29(d) of the Disaster Management Act, 2005. The provisions empower district authorities to take preventive measures and issue necessary directions during situations that may pose a threat to public safety.
District officials emphasized that the move is part of broader efforts to reduce disaster risks and ensure public safety during adverse weather conditions. They urged residents to remain vigilant, especially those living in landslide-prone areas, and to follow advisories issued by local authorities and disaster management agencies.
The notification has been circulated to various departments and agencies, including the School Education Department, the Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Department, local disaster management committees, and other relevant authorities for information and necessary action.
Educational institutions have been advised to inform students, parents, and guardians about the closure and to take appropriate steps to ensure that the information reaches all concerned individuals. Authorities also encouraged parents to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall.
