New Delhi, April 21: Mizoram Governor General (Dr.) Vijay Kumar Singh (Retd.) attended the 80th Foundation Day celebration of the Department of Library and Information Science at Delhi University as the Chief Guest on Tuesday. The event was held at the Convention Hall in the Vice Regal Lodge on the university campus.
Addressing the gathering, the Governor highlighted the enduring value of public libraries and books in shaping an informed and educated society. However, he expressed concern over the declining importance of public libraries in modern times, noting that their relevance has gradually diminished in contemporary society.
Drawing comparisons with global practices, Singh pointed out that many European nations continue to place strong emphasis on developing and maintaining robust public library systems. He urged educators, students, and policymakers to revive and strengthen India’s rich tradition of library culture.
“Now is the time to revive and improve them,” he said, stressing the need to restore the prominence of libraries as centers of knowledge and learning.

The Governor also noted that while the role of libraries in educational institutions is evolving in the digital age, they remain fundamental in building a strong foundation for national development. He praised India’s long-standing academic heritage, citing Nalanda University as a historic symbol of the country’s excellence in education.
Congratulating the Department of Library and Information Science on completing 80 years, Singh wished the institution continued success in advancing research, education, and the promotion of knowledge.
