Champhai, April 21: Champhai Police destroyed seized narcotics worth more than ₹465 crore at the District Hospital Complex on Tuesday in the presence of Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Aaquib, marking one of the largest drug disposal operations in the district.

Addressing the gathering, the Deputy Commissioner said that drugs worth over ₹117 crore had been destroyed last year and described the disposal of drugs valued at over ₹465 crore this year as a significant achievement by Champhai Police.
He highlighted the importance of the state government’s Operation Jericho initiative in strengthening the fight against drug trafficking and called for continued efforts to curb the menace of narcotics in the region. He also stressed the need to educate young people about the dangers of drug abuse and encouraged them to pursue opportunities in sports, education, and other constructive activities.
Additional Superintendent of Police Victor Zothansanga, who conducted the programme, briefed attendees on the various operations through which the drugs were seized and thanked police personnel and supporters who assisted in the anti-drug drive. Superintendent of Police Lokeshwaran R also addressed the gathering.

The drugs destroyed were seized by Champhai Police from various locations and had already received permission for disposal from the District Court.
According to officials, the destroyed substances included 35.852 kg of heroin valued at ₹71.70 crore, 490.896 kg of methamphetamine worth ₹392.71 crore, and 4.740 kg of alprazolam valued at ₹94.8 lakh, bringing the total value to approximately ₹465.36 crore.
Police records show that during 2025, Champhai Police registered 147 cases under the ND&PS Act and arrested 260 individuals, including 58 Myanmar nationals. Between January 1 and April 20, 2026, police registered 47 cases, arresting 76 individuals, including 22 Myanmar nationals, while seizing significant quantities of heroin and methamphetamine.
Authorities reiterated their commitment to intensifying efforts to combat drug trafficking and protect the region from the growing narcotics threat.
