CM Sangma Meets German Development Bank Officials on Sustainable Agriculture

Shillong, April 21: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma met officials from Germany’s KfW Development Bank on Tuesday to discuss collaboration on a project aimed at transforming the state’s agricultural sector.

The proposed initiative focuses on institutionalising agroecological and organic farming as a key component of Meghalaya’s strategy to build a sustainable and climate-resilient economy.

During the meeting, discussions centred on creating income-generating systems that support the long-term livelihoods of farmers while promoting environmentally responsible agricultural practices.

Chief Minister Sangma highlighted the importance of working with international partners to expand economic opportunities for the state’s farming community and expressed optimism about strengthening cooperation to advance sustainable agriculture.

The initiative is expected to integrate traditional farming knowledge with modern scientific approaches, with a focus on improving productivity and strengthening market linkages for organic produce.

By promoting agroecology - the application of ecological principles to agriculture - the project aims to address climate change impacts on natural resources while supporting the financial stability of rural households in the state.
