| Participants display their catch during the Community Fish Harvesting Event at Khawthlang Tuipui, Tlabung in 2022, organised by the Fisheries Department Mizoram and Young Mizo Association. |
The meeting was chaired by Pi Zonunthari, Joint Secretary of the Fisheries Department. According to the plan, the three-day event will feature different fishing activities. On the first day, participants will fish using rods, while on the second day experienced anglers will fish using nets. The third day will be reserved specifically for local residents.
Registration for the event has already opened, with a fee of ₹100 per fishing rod. Participants will be allowed to register more than one rod. However, net fishing will be limited to experienced individuals rather than the general public.

Several awards will be presented during the event, including prizes for the largest catch, highest number of fish caught, best woman angler, youngest participant, and oldest participant.
Officials said such harvesting events are permitted under the Fisheries Act once every three years in designated protected areas. A similar programme was last held in Tlabung in 2022, but this year’s event will be organised as an open event for participants from across Mizoram.
As part of conservation measures, fish weighing below 2 kilograms caught using nets must be released back into the river. Arrangements have also been made to allow freshly caught fish to be sold on the spot during the event.
