Guwahati, April 25, 2026: A 27-year-old school teacher from Guwahati, who was reported missing after sending a distress message to her family, has been traced safe in Shillong, Meghalaya, bringing relief to her relatives after an intensive search by the police.

The woman, identified as Bhabana Sarma, was found inside a room at a branch of the State Bank of India (SBI) near Polo Ground in Shillong. According to reports, bank employees arriving at the premises early in the morning discovered her in a distressed condition and immediately informed the local police, who took her into their care.
Bhabana had gone missing on April 24 at around 11 a.m. while travelling in a cab from Tetelia in Guwahati towards Azara. During the journey, she reportedly sent a message to her mother stating that she was "in danger." Shortly afterwards, her mobile phone became unreachable, triggering panic among family members.
Concerned over the sudden loss of contact, the family launched efforts to trace her whereabouts. Her last known mobile phone location was reportedly detected near the Gauhati University–Panbazar area. When repeated attempts to contact her failed, her relatives lodged a missing person complaint at Jalukbari Police Station, prompting Assam Police to initiate a search operation.
Police coordinated with their counterparts in Meghalaya after receiving information that the missing teacher had been located in Shillong. Following confirmation of her safety, Bhabana's family members, accompanied by a police team, left for the Meghalaya capital to bring her back home.

Officials have not yet disclosed how she reached Shillong or the circumstances that led to her being found inside the bank premises. Police said these details would become clearer after recording her statement and conducting a thorough inquiry.
The incident had sparked widespread concern on social media after news of her disappearance and distress message circulated online. With her safe recovery, attention has now shifted to understanding the sequence of events that led to her disappearance.
Authorities said further investigation is underway, and more details are expected to emerge after questioning and verification of the facts. Police have urged the public to avoid speculation until the investigation is completed.
