Entrance of the alleged unauthorised Lumparing Masjid at Lower Lumparing in Shillong, which was sealed by the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Laban Circle citing lack of approval from the local Dorbar Shnong.

According to the union, the structure had been converted into a place of worship known as “Lumparing Masjid” without obtaining the necessary permission from the Dorbar Shnong Lower Lumparing or other relevant authorities.

KSU Laban Circle general secretary Shiningstar Chyne said the union acted after receiving complaints from local residents. He claimed that an inquiry by the union found that the premises, originally designated as a caretaker’s quarters for a chowkidar responsible for maintaining a nearby Muslim graveyard, had gradually been repurposed into a mosque.

The union further alleged that the Dorbar Shnong had earlier inspected the site and directed that the signboard bearing the name “Lumparing Masjid” be removed. However, the directive was reportedly not complied with.

Chyne also raised concerns about sanitation around the premises and alleged that waste from the site was being discharged into surrounding areas. He further claimed that an imam had been residing at the location for about six months without proper documentation such as a No Objection Certificate (NOC) or police verification.

During the action, KSU members sealed the structure and asked the imam to vacate the premises. The union said it plans to lodge a formal complaint with the authorities seeking the complete removal of the structure.

Officials from the union stated that further action would depend on the response from local authorities and the Dorbar Shnong.
