Shillong, April 16: Conrad K. Sangma chaired a meeting with officials of the Food & Civil Supplies Department to review a proposal aimed at diversifying the Public Distribution System (PDS) under the state’s Mission 1000 Days initiative.
During the meeting, discussions focused on introducing the Meghalaya Nutrition Kit Scheme, a programme designed to provide additional nutritional support to expecting mothers across the state. The initiative aims to improve maternal health and ensure healthier development for babies right from conception.
The proposed diversification of the PDS will include a wider range of nutritious and locally sourced food items. According to the Chief Minister, the move is intended to ensure that families not only have access to food but also benefit from balanced and healthier diets.

Officials highlighted that the scheme will strengthen food security while placing greater emphasis on maternal and child nutrition. The government believes that improved nutrition during the early stages of pregnancy will contribute significantly to the long-term health and development of children in Meghalaya.
The initiative forms part of the state government’s broader strategy to enhance welfare programmes and promote better health outcomes for mothers and children across the state.
